Help Save The Sharks Sea Walls Expeditions Murals Project

Sea Walls Expeditions Murals For Oceans Featuring Various Artists From Around The World

ABOUT PROJECT:

Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is a ground-breaking street art project created by PangeaSeed to bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe. By collaborating with internationally renowned artists, we create large-scale murals that focus attention on pressing environmental issues the oceans are facing.

In collaboration with our friends at 1xRUN we are embarking on our biggestSea Walls project yet. We’ve invited some of today’s biggest names in contemporary street art to join us on our first-ever Sea Walls expedition.

The mission of the expedition is to offer these artists the opportunity to swim with and study endangered whale sharks and oceanic manta rays off the coast of the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico from July 20-28, 2014. Inspired by their interactions with these majestic giants in the wild, the artists will create a series of large-scale public murals on the island to help educate and raise greatly needed awareness within the local and tourist communities for the plight of these animals and the oceans. The murals will also highlight the benefits of ecotourism and long-term sustainability of natural resources.

Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is a new approach to ocean conservation, marrying art and activism. The Sea Walls expedition will make a large impact and gain global media attention – with your help.

You can help us reach our project budget of $25,000 USD to cover all project expenses.

In return for your support, we are offering you an awesome selection of exciting perks to fit any budget.

Both the whale sharks and the oceanic manta ray are listed as species threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to destructive global fishing practices and the unregulated trade. Despite the protection efforts of several countries, these animals are considered highly lucrative for the Asian shark fin trade and the growing mega-aquarium trade both adding pressures on their already vulnerable populations.

Completely harmless to people, whale sharks and manta rays are some of the largest wild animals one will ever be able to experience up close.

  • 71% of Earth is covered by oceans and are home to 2.3 million species.
  • 70% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean, making it the life-support system of the planet.
  • Oceans regulate weather and provide food and employment for over 2.5 billion people globally.
  • Less than 1%(!) of the world’s oceans are protected (compared to 15% of land).
  • Global fish stocks are predicted to be in full collapse by mid-century if our consumption and destructive fishing habits do not change.
  • Up to 100 million sharks are killed annually for the global shark fin trade.
  • Plastic waste kills up to 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals and countless fish each year.
  • 70% of the world’s fisheries are overexploited or depleted.
  • The world’s coral reefs are predicted to be dead by mid-century.
