Street Art Of The Day By The Talented Emily Eldridge

ABOUT PROJECT GIRL TALK

“Girl Talk” is a mural collaboration created by illustrators Levi Jacobs (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and Emily Eldridge (Berlin, Germany), and painted on a street corner in Barcelona, Spain. It’s a playful take on a gossip-y conversation between a group of girlfriends.  Emojis and punctuation are used in speech bubbles to tell an imaginary story, leaving the viewer to decide what it is the girls are talking about – a bad boyfriend? A break-up? A new crush? It’s an oversized comic book come to life.

ABOUT EMILY ELDRIDGE

Emily Eldridge is an American illustrator, muralist, and graphic designer currently based in Berlin, Germany (previously Barcelona, Spain and Hong Kong). Her work spans a variety of creative media – from murals to street art, editorial illustration, visual merchandising, set design, and more. Recent clients include Custo Barcelona, Lane Crawford, and Adidas NEO.

ABOUT UNFOLLOW CLUB

“Unfollow Club” is a playful take on modern romance and breakups in the age of Tinder, Bumble, Instagram, and Facebook. Heartbreak in today’s age is no longer followed by ripping up photos or burning love letters, but instead through blocking, unfollowing, or muting the objects of our failed relationships across social media. This mural was created in Barcelona along with graffiti artist NinjaXpert / Osier Luther (whose version can be seen in the second image). It is intended to be viewed as a life sized comic book, or Part 2 of the series “Smartphone Love Story”, a similar collaborative mural created by the duo in February 2018.

ABOUT FACES PLACES

“Faces Places”  is a mural located in the Causeway Bay district of Hong Kong.  It was created for an event called StreetMaze Hunt, part of arts programming in conjunction with the annual Hong Kong Rugby Sevens. The event encouraged the public to “look up” to find a series of hidden-in-plain-sight street art in one of Hong Kong’s busiest neighborhoods. Upon encountering a work of street art, they could use a related app to collect prizes, shopping discounts, and other rewards in nearby shops and malls.  This mural is located on a residential building, with many stores and restaurants below, and features a colorfully illustrated and playful representation of this diverse area – office workers, laborers, students, youth, elderly, and more.  It aims to show a positive and cheerful side to the busy and chaotic neighborhood.

ABOUT TRABAJADORAS

“Trabajadoras” or “Women at Work” was created for #Aptitudes, a cultural sector of the Ayuntamiento de La Rambla (City Government of La Rambla) in the pueblo of La Rambla, Córdoba, Spain. La Rambla is a village in southern Spain known for its “alfarería” or pottery. The mural celebrates the women who make up the backbone of the industry there, yet are often overlooked as essential to the local economy.  It features them at various stages of work, and showcases some of the signature pottery shapes and colors (bright blue and terra cotta) that are specific to the village and the Córdoba region. Additional colors reflect the surrounding landscape, the Spanish sun, and even the colors of the Spanish flag (red and yellow). The project also aims to bring high level art projects to the people of the countryside, to share culture and beauty equally with non-urban dwellers.  The mural is located in the Jardines de Andalucía, a recently renovated park in the village.

ABOUT PASADO / PRESENTE / FUTURO

“Pasado / Presente / Futuro” or “Past / Present / Future” is a mural created in three parts for the US Barcelona Street Art Festival in October 2018. Painted on the outer walls of the former La Modelo Prison in Barcelona, Spain, the mural site has great historical and emotional significance in Spain and especially in Barcelona.  La Modelo held political prisoners throughout the Franco regime.  Executions, overcrowding, and inhumane treatment were just but a few of the atrocities that took place during that time, and in the more than 100-year history of the prison.  Currently, the city government of Barcelona has plans to turn it into a cultural center of sorts – including offices, schools, and exhibition spaces – a proposal not met without controversy to the neighbors (many of whom would rather see the whole place torn to the ground). Regardless, the US Barcelona Street Art Festival enables the city to see the space in a new light, finally bringing color and a smile to this very “dark” place.
The mural, “Pasado / Presente / Futuro” represents the history, present day, and future of the prison itself, reflecting on the tears of its past, the seeds of today, and the flowers of tomorrow – a life cycle – and a way to look back at a traumatic history with hope for the future.
“Crybabies” is street art located in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain.
“Bosc de Columnes” is a makeshift Street Art Gallery of sorts, located on a highway underpass in the Sant Adria de Besos suburb of Barcelona, Spain. Full of more than 100 columns painted by local artists, the initiative was started to add beauty to a rather unsightly area that runs through the middle of the neighborhood.  Through the art painted there over the past year and a half, the zone has been transformed.  I painted a series of female figures enjoying a variety of hobbies – drawing, skateboarding, reading, eating ice cream, and picking flowers.
