Danny van Ryswyk works digitally, producing prints and 3D sculptures of moody and contemplative characters, often with dark themes and settings. Encased in bell-jars, they have
a Victorian feel of scientific specimens from another era. Painstakingly painted in tiny details
they can be surrounded by scenic tableaus, and/or holding stage-like props. Danny’s sculpts capture the past and can echo a brave new world – in an impressively beautiful and hypnotic way.
MORE ABOUT DANNY VAN RYSYWK
“When I was a young boy, my mother and I had a UFO encounter that made a huge impression on me.
This event has certainly influenced my desire to explore all things that exist outside the boundaries of science ability
to explain or measure. I am inspired by all things abnormal, paranormal, the mystique and the extraterrestrial.
I like to take bits and pieces of my fascination and implement this into my art.
I had an education as a designer, illustrator and art director. I have a 20 year background as an illustrator specialised in photorealistic packaging illustrations.
There was a growing desire in me that wanted to create work that was related to my interests, instead of being in service
of commercial agencies. This resulted in experimenting with 3D-software and creating my first digital paintings.
As time passed by I began to make use of 3D-printers to create 3D-sculptures which I paint by hand,
like the old polychrome religious sculptures.
This has all led to a whole new style in where my dark childhood fantasies take form and shape.”
