ABOUT BEN FROST AND WORK

Australian born artist Ben Frost is known for his kaleidoscopic Pop Art, mash-up paintings that take inspiration from areas as diverse as graffiti, collage, photorealism and sign-writing. He has been exhibiting throughout the world for the last 12 years and has been involved in his own share of controversy. In 2000, he faked his own death for an exhibition suitably titled ‘Ben Frost is Dead’ which made national news in Australia. His painting ‘White Children Playing’ caused a stir for its graphic depiction of children using drugs and a masked and disgruntled assailant slashed one of the paintings in his exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane. Police also tried to remove one of his collaborative artworks in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney because of its graphic nature.

“The world is run by clowns. Moronic and colorful, they dance across our television screens touting surreal propaganda and advertising slogans in a bizarre theatrical performance without intermission. I use mini-dialogues that come together to make up an overall pastiche, that reflects how I see the world – especially as it is delivered to us through the media. In these ‘mash-up’ paintings, countless characters exist and interact within the same picture plane, to create a frenetic snapshot of the chaos that we endure in our every-day lives.” – Ben Frost

21 x 62 Inches Mixed Media Sculpture
Canadian artist Denial and Australian born Ben Frost have joined forces in a bold exhibition of new work that explores the boundaries of appropriation, in confronting re-imaginings of our current dystopian society. Self-confessed ‘visual thieves’, both artists have had a long history of stealing and subverting the cultural icons that the advertising and consumerist world has thrust upon us, to create new and pertinent interpretations that are as confronting as they are humorous.

Denial and Frost formed an instant friendship since their meeting in Canada in 2011 and have been creating engaging street and gallery work ever since. “Company of Thieves” sees their collaboration push further, with large and small-scale works that reference Pop Art, Graffiti and the corporate world they rebel against.
