ABOUT JAMES RAWSON:

James Rawson is a postmodern pop artist, born 1989, in Norfolk England.  Predominantly working in the medium of collage and painting, James found no inspiration in the beautiful Norfolk landscape he grew up in. Instead realizing the landscape of pop culture fed to him via the media had more relevance. James completed a BA Honors in Fine Art at Loughborough University in 2011. Exhibitions include ‘Diversity in Style’, ‘British art for the future’ at the Olyvia Fine Art gallery in London and is currently represented by the MAC Fine Gallery in Miami. After moving to London for a short period, he returned to his hometown in Norfolk where he now lives and works.

James’ work blurs the boundaries between collage and painting, using preparatory paper collages as reference for his larger paintings. He aims to reflect the multilayered visual experience we all live in. Appropriating the very images that have become implicit in our society, James’ work disturbs our sense of reality and confuses our pre-conceived perception of popular culture.

James’ work addresses one of the most important issues of the last 50 years; over- consumption, greed, inequality and life as a spectacle. James’ work screams at you, there is no room for prevarication. It deals with the ubiquity of advertising, sex selling everything, fast food and TV as the drug of a nation. So perhaps you don’t like what you see, the bawdy reality, the cheap thrill, the constant accumulation of sweet things, processed things, plastic things. Unnatural things: but it doesn’t take away from the fact it’s the truth. So on we go, round and round on our big fat merry-go-round while James puts up the mirror to our pathetic world of consumption.

Package Design By Cecilia Uhr

Whitebites Package Design

If you happen to have a dog, you may have noticed that there isn’t much of a variety when it comes to dog food and snacks package design. For this project, we examined reinventing packaging for rawhide sticks used for chewing.  After thoroughly¬ examining multiple pet supply stores, we noticed that most rawhides were in clear plastic bags, or in some cases, not even packaged at all. While Plastic bags are harmful to the environment and in this case not reusable, not having any kind of protection is unhygienic. The new solution to his conundrum came about through a combination of humour, a consciousness for the environment, and aesthetics.
There are three different sizes available for the customers, and each size is differentiated by the type of dog illustrated and the diagram indicated on the bottom left. The mouth of each dog is cut out so that consumers can see the product inside, as well as view it as the white “teeth” of the dog. The left ear serves as a flap in which the user can open to slide out sticks one at a time instead of having to put their hands in the box. The other ear functions as a “hook” to put up on display racks. The back of the package design explains the nutrition facts, ingredients, and highlights of the product. The package is meant to be a collectors’ item, and is also refillable with new rawhide sticks.
All illustrations and design was done by Cecilia Uhr.

ABOUT CECILIA UHR

“I guess I could say that i’m a dreamer. No, not the cliché kind, but the kind of person who drifts away into silliest of day dreams sipping a cup of coffee on the bus. That’s where i get the most freedom to be creative. It’s odd that i find these random moments of peace the right time to cook up my next projects, but if you could see into my mind during some of my most intimate daydreams, you would understand why. This quirky habit of mine has spurred on many ideas that eventually made its way onto some of my favourite works.”

“Aside from being a day dreamer, I’m also a third-year student in the Bachelor of Design Honours program at York University/Sheridan College, full-time coffee sipper (as you may have guessed), graphic designer, illustrator, dog lover, and maker. I can get real crafty with my small hands if I set my mind to it. I also draw, paint, do a little bit of front-end development, and write. It’s become my habit to carry a sketchbook around everywhere so that I don’t miss any of my crazy ideas. So welcome, and enjoy the ride. ”

Personal Projects By Freelance Artist Brock Davis

Broccoli House

I wasn’t able to build my son a treehouse, so I built him this broccoli house instead.
Made with balsa wood.
Exhibitionist Coffee Cup

Random / goofy idea I had when I was supposed to be doing client work. This was quite easy to make. Cut the coffee sleeve in half and tape it to back of cup. Cut a section from the back of the cup to make the hands. Tape it all together and draw a creepy face. Place it on a table in your local coffee shop and see how people react.
Gummy Bearskin Rug

This was another idea that was just sitting around in my head waiting to get made. I often execute these kinds of pieces because I am curious as to what the piece will look like once executed.
Dark Side of the Doritos

Made from sliced bag pieces from the following 8 Doritos flavors: Late Night Cheeseburger, Pizza Supreme, Nacho Cheese, Throwback Taco, Toasted Corn, Salsa Verde, Blazin’ Buffalo & Ranch and Spicy Sweet Chili.
Boba Fett’s Invoice to Jabba the Hut

I wanted to make this for a long time. I finally found the time to execute. Thanks to my friend Dan Wallace, author of The Jedi Path, for helping me with some of the minute details.
Snoutlet

Recently, I was interviewed by tpt.org in regards to my Make Something Cool Every Day project. I was asked to try and make something creative on the spot, in the room where I was being interviewed. After evaluating the room, I was struck with an idea. I got out my marker and voila, Snoutlet.

ART BY BROCK DAVIS

These are some of the recent personal pieces I’ve made for fun. Most of these pieces are made at home on the weekends. I get a lot of inspiration from my children. They create spontaneously, everything is new to them. I often try to revert back to childhood when creating, which helps me to view ordinary things in a new way.
