Celebrity Hedcut Art By Noli Novak

ILLUSTRATOR: NOLI NOVAK

I am a staff hedcut illustrator at The Wall Street Journal with over 26 years of experience. I have created tens of thousands of original illustrations for the paper and wide variety of clients ranging from all publishing, corporate brochures and advertising to product and website illustration and social media avatars.

“Part of my job at the Wall Street Journal is training new illustrators in the hedcut technique. It has been developed at the paper and kept alive by only a handful of us who had a privilege of learning the tricks of the trade. Mastering the hedcut technique is just one aspect of this illustration style. Capturing the likeness of the subject is ultimately more important, which is best shown with celebrity portraits.

Most of my portraits are done as spot illustration accompanying newspaper articles or as requested by my clients for various projects. I usually don’t pick my subjects and I’m given clear rights or permission for use of reference photographs I base my portraits on.”

Hedcut is a term referring to a style of drawing, associated with The Wall Street Journal. They use the stipple method of many small dots and the hatching method of small lines to create an image, and are designed to emulate the look of woodcuts from old-style newspapers, and engravings on certificates and currency. The phonetic spelling of “hed” may be based on newspapers’ use of the term hed for “headline.”

Video Games vs Real Life by Aled Lewis (4)

These works are by artist Aled Lewis from his “Video Games Vs Real Life” series.

ARTIST: ALED LEWIS

Aled Lewis is a designer, illustrator and author based in London, England. He came to London from Portsmouth in 2005 to study Graphic Design and has lived and worked there ever since. Aled is a life-long gamer: influenced and inspired by comics, film and television. His favourite shows are Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Breaking Bad. He loves Jurassic Park. His clients include Polaroid, GQ, Gap, New York Times, Urban Outfitters, Penguin, Vice and Sony. He is a Gemini.

VIDEO GAMES VS REAL LIFE SERIES:

A mash-up of video game characters and photographic scenes. As a kid I would become completely immersed in these crude pixel environments and they would seem very real. I thought it would be fun to try to express how gamers see these worlds. I spent many hours gaming with my siblings and friends when I was growing up and this aesthetic has really come to represent that time.

Amazing Sculptures By Kris Kuksi

Sculptures by artist Kris Kuksi

Kris Kuksi garners recognition and acclaim for the intricate sculptures that result from his unique and meticulous technique. A process that requires countless hours to assemble, collect, manipulate, cut, and re-shape thousands of individual parts, finally uniting them into an orchestral-like seamless cohesion that defines the historical rise and fall of civilization and envisions the possible future(s) of humanity. Each sculpture embodies the trademarks of his philosophy and practice, while serving as a testament to the multifaceted nature of perception – From timeless iconic references of Gods and Goddess, to challenging ideas of organized religion and morality, to the struggle to understand, and bend, the limits of mortality. None is complete without a final and brilliant touch of satire and rebuke all conceived in the aesthetic essence of the Baroque fused with the modern day industrial world.

In personal reflection, Kris feels that in the world today much of mankind is oftentimes frivolous and fragile, being driven primarily by greed and materialism. He hopes that his art exposes the fallacies of Man, unveiling a new level of awareness to the viewer. His work has received several awards and prizes and has been featured in over 100 exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Kris’ art can also be seen in a number of international art magazines, book covers and theatrical posters. Kris’ art is featured in both public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Australia that include individuals such as Mark Parker (Nike CEO), Kay Alden (three time Emmy award winning writer for Young and the Restless & Bold and the Beautiful), Fred Durst (musician, and film director), Chris Weitz (movie director The Golden Compass & Twilight: New Moon) Guillermo del Toro (movie director Pan’s Labyrinth & Hell Boy 2) and Robin Williams (Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actor).
