ABOUT SPEEDY GRAPHITO
Avant-garde avant-garde artist, recognized as one of the pioneers of the French street art movement (Contemporary urban art), Speedy Graphito is today internationally one of the major artists of his generation.
Since the early 80’s, just after the free figuration, SG permeates the “Graphito Style” collective memory and the walls of Paris by coloring them with its striking graphics.
SG product of Art.
As prolific as it is inventive, SG uses all forms of expression – painting, sculpture, installation, photography or video – to create through his work and throughout the ages a universal language imbued with the air of time.
Elaborated by themes, its exhibitions follow one another, offering new and surprising universes. As it constantly evolves and reinvents itself, its trademark is that of a joyful and deep art, often with lively colors, in which it shakes our systems of perception in a playful and ironic way. In this process, he does not hesitate to take away all the imagery of popular culture, superheroes and even brands, thus realizing a quasi-systematic deciphering of our collective unconscious. He then declines in as many questions the norms and dictates of our Western cultural identity, superimposing on the reality of our society a more poetic dimension.
When SG uses a precise personal imaginary dictionary, which is tangibly linked to the history of art, it is in reality that he is most often inclined to provide the keys. There, everyone will find if he wishes, a good reason to pursue a more personal quest. The themes of childhood and death, which have always been widely present, give the works a more autobiographical character, inspired by their peregrinations and their inner journeys. All are an invitation to travel and awakening. The work, as a whole, is that of a passer-by, marked by the dreamlike imprint of a true iconoclast.
As at ease in public pictorial performances as in the intimacy of his studio, SG gives body and soul to his passion. In the urgency of the time that passes, it acts in a mode “Survival”.
SG is a popular artist. It is the order of the poster for “The Rush to Art” in 1985 by the Ministry of Culture which immediately conferred a wide recognition and a notoriety to the general public.
