INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST PHIL GUY AKA BURRITO BREATH
Q: How do you describe your style of art? like what inspires you to create stuff?
I would describe my style of art, as irreverent commercial illustration. I wouldn’t consider there to be any specific sources of inspiration for the stuff I make. For the most part life in general is a source of inspiration. It feels like in a some ways my work comes from the same place as a standup comedian’s material. Just taking note of the people and things around you gives a lot of inspiration for humorous creative output.
Q: What was your eureka moment when you created a piece of work and was like man this is what i want to do from now on ?
If I had to pick any sort of eureka moment it would be back to when I was probably 8/9 years old. I was at my grandmas kitchen table trying to redraw characters out of an X-Men comic. My grandma was so stoked on a drawing of Beast that I did, that I realized art might be a way to make people happy and excited. Later I learned that drawing tits, weed, and all of my other favorite bad habits might not be something that makes my grandma stoked.
Q: Who are your major influences behind your style of art?
I would say the major influences on my style or lack thereof would be: Giant, Coop, Crumb, Wolverton, Irons, Mitch O’ Connell, and a few others who inspire me to push for something original or unique in my own work.
This one is tricky because I never really got into Marvel comics beyond about 9 years old….buuuut without any deep consideration I’d have to give it to Wolverine. (I hope this doesn’t start a battle online…save that hate mail for something good. )
Q: What do you do for fun when your not doing the art thing?
Outside of making art I’m pretty fuckin’ boring. I like being outdoors as much as possible. I’ve always really been into bicycles, music, and in the last few years I got into reading daily again.
Q: What music are you listening to at the moment?
As far as music goes I’m really all over the map. Lately I’ve been obsessed with a band called Fountainsun, really killer folky-psych kinda stuff. I’ve also been listening to a lot of my favorites: YOB, thee oh sees, yonatan gat, king khan, big business, old man gloom, kool dj rise, mf doom, dilla, and on and on haha.
Q: Do you have a favorite artist at the moment other than you lol
I’ve been really stoked on so many people through instagram as far as new art goes, but I don’t wanna feel bad for leaving anyone out so I’ll go with stuff I don’t usually see on IG. My favorite painter ever is Glenn Brown so go check him out. If I had to choose someone with less of that style and something more maybe in line with what I do it would probably be someone like Espo, he’s so fuckin good.
Q: Another random question what is your favorite junk food if you have any
My favorite junk food of all time would have to be pizza flavored combos! The best thing’s in life are found at the gas station.
Q: Where are you from? tell the audience alittle about you?
I am a reclusive weirdo born and raised in small town Ohio. I’ve lived in a few places, bust most recently moved back to Ohio from California. I’m always stoked on new places and people, but having a cheap cost of living is awesome. Right now I’m making art full time and trying to take full advantage of it. Its been a tough road to get here, but super fun.
Q: Last but not least where can the viewers find you/your work/your store?
If you wanna keep an eye out for what I’m doing I try and update my instagram: @burritobreath daily. I also have a tumbler also just: burritobreath.tumblr.com, and my website is: burritobreath.com
Thanks so much for the support! I appreciate what you’re doing and wish you guys the best. — P
